There is a commonplace view that teenagers think they are indestructible.

“It really is true,” said Bernadette Melnyk, Ohio State University’s chief wellness officer and dean of the college of nursing. “Teens just don’t think much about health issues and especially about the actions they can take now to prevent a future health crisis.”

Center of Excellence in Critical and Complex Care becomes Center for Healthy Aging, Self-Management and Complex Care

The Ohio State University College of Nursing’s Center of Excellence in Critical and Complex Care has been renamed the Center for Healthy Aging, Self-Management and Complex Care to more accurately reflect the research conducted at the center, which aims to generate evidence that will improve health and care delivery to adults and older adults across settings.

The Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice in Nursing and Healthcare Launches the First EBP Certificate of Added Qualification Program

In the United States there are up to 400,000 unintended patient deaths every year. Additionally, receiving healthcare is the third leading cause of death in the country. The Institute of Medicine established a goal that by 2020, 90 percent of all healthcare decisions would be evidence based. Today, only 30 percent of decisions are evidence based, which has led to patients receiving roughly 55 percent of the care that they require when entering the current healthcare system.

AWHONN video highlights college's research

With the goal of improving the health of women and infants, The Ohio State University College of Nursing partnered with the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) in collaboration with ITN productions to produce a video as part of AWHONN’s Partners in Care program. The video addresses research to improve screening techniques to detect depression and anxiety in pregnant and postpartum women.

Kue awarded $1.7 million grant from the American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society has awarded a $1.7 million, five-year grant to fund the “Intergenerational Refugee and Immigrant Cancer Screening Project.” The grant was awarded to Jennifer Kue, PhD, (PI) who is an assistant professor in the Center of Excellence in Critical and Complex Care and director of the Office of Global Innovations at The Ohio State University College of Nursing.

McDaniel awarded $2.8 million NIH/NIA R01 grant

The National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Aging (NIH/NIA) has awarded a five-year, $2.8 million R01 grant to fund the study, “Impact of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Oral Therapy on Healing of Chronic Venous Leg Ulcers in Older Adults.” The grant was awarded to Jodi McDaniel, PhD, RN, (PI), who is an associate professor and the graduate studies committee chair at The Ohio State University College of Nursing.

New funding announced for Community Health Worker Training Program

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Friday, September 28, The Ohio State University College of Nursing announced new funding for the Community Health Worker Training Program. The Franklin County commissioners will provide $180,000 of funding for three cohorts of trainees, totaling 75 newly trained community health workers. In collaboration with CelebrateOne, many community health workers will be hired to help combat the area’s high infant mortality rate.
