September 2023: Laureen Smith

We were thrilled to have Dr. Laureen Smith as our September 27, 2023 guest speaker at the state/national level. Dr. Smith has led innovative and transformative research r/t childhood obesity in one of the most marginalized parts of Ohio: Appalachia, in the Southeast region of Ohio. At its heart, successful conduct of community-engaged research involves a care and concern for the community itself, as well as a respect/understanding that the community holds the knowledge regarding needs and assets, and the academician holds the expertise (research skills) to collaborate in solving complex social and public health problems. Few scholars have demonstrated the long-term success that Dr. Smith has – we are grateful for her willingness to share her experiences!
