Remembering Dr. Carole A. Anderson

To our College of Nursing family,

I am heartbroken to share that Dr. Carole Anderson, former College of Nursing Dean, has passed away.

Carole was an awesome advocate and leader for our college and our university. She was appointed as dean of our college in 1986 and served as president of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. She was a powerful and impactful leader at our university in a career that spanned four decades. She left the deanship in 2001 to work as vice provost for academic administration (2001-2002), vice provost for academic policy and faculty resources (2002-2006) and vice provost and interim dean of the Graduate School (2005-2006). She then led the College of Dentistry from 2006 until her retirement on August 1, 2011. She remained a loyal and generous supporter of our college and our students.

Carole was a Chicago native who earned her BSN, MS in psychiatric nursing and PhD in sociology from the University of Colorado. She taught at Colorado and served as associate dean at the University of Rochester School of Nursing in New York for nine years before coming to Buckeye Nation.

Carole maintained a clinical practice for HIV-infected patients in collaboration with the Colleges of Medicine and Public Health for 14 years, and she was a longtime board member for the Columbus Board of Health. Among her many awards, she received Ohio State’s Distinguished Service Award in 2013, which recognizes individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the university in both official and unofficial capacities.

You can read more about Carole's remarkable life and legacy at this link. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 17 at 3 p.m. at the Faculty Club here on the Columbus campus. In lieu of flowers, the family is inviting people to support our terrific students through the Carole A. Anderson Graduate Fellowship Endowment Fund.

Please join me in keeping Carole’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. She was an inspirational leader who put our wonderful College of Nursing on the map for cutting-edge research and was highly respected throughout the country for the impact she made on nursing.

Warm and well regards,
