Two alumni recognized in first annual Preceptor Awards

The Ohio State University College of Nursing recognized two alumni for their phenomenal work with students in the first annual Preceptor Awards. Derrick Grey, MS, PMHNP, was awarded the 2020 Preceptor Achievement Award. Cynthia Milich, MS, CNP, received the 2020 Preceptor of the Year Award.

Both awards were determined by number of precepting hours. The Preceptor Achievement award included all preceptor hours since autumn 2018, while the Preceptor of the Year Award considered hours over the most recent academic year.

Grey, who is a current DNP student, precepted eight psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner students at Ohio State Harding Hospital since 2018 and completed a total of 1,788 precepting hours.

Milich, who graduated from the College of Nursing in 1998, precepted five family nurse practitioner students for a total of 884 hours throughout the 2019-2020 academic year.

These awards were designed to recognize the essential role that preceptors play in the education of our nursing students. Going forward, the college plans to create more awards to acknowledge the outstanding work of preceptors and the impact they have on their students.

“I think the general public may not be aware of how much nurses and other health care professionals do to improve health outcomes,” Courtney Ruffalo-Miller, MA, clinical placement director, said. “We all know they do so much for individual patients and the health of their community, but they also share their expertise and time to help educate the next generation of nurses. This ‘behind-the-scenes’ contribution to the health and well-being of society needs to be more widely recognized.”
