Compliance for incoming students

In compliance with university requirements and clinical agencies or practicum sites, many of our students are required to be vaccinated, licensed and/or trained in the following categories. The requirements listed below are general and program-specific information can be found further down this page.

  • BLS Provider or ACLS Provider CPR Certification through the American Heart Association
  • HIPAA Training through the BuckeyeLearn system
  • Computer Based Learning Modules
  • RN License
  • Proof of National APRN Certification
  • Immunization:
    • College of Nursing requirements: Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella, Tdap, Two Step PPD, and Influenza.
    • Additional university vaccines may be required for Ohio State students, including the COVID-19 vaccination. For more information on university vaccine requirements, including Covid-19 vaccine, please visit the Safe and Healthy and the Student Health Services websites.
    • Additional vaccines or requirements may be required for clinical, based on agency guidelines, and requirements are subject to change.

In addition to the requirements listed above, students are required to submit a FBI and BCI background check and drug screening.

Upon admission into the College of Nursing you will receive a list of required certifications and medical documentation that must be completed in order to be eligible to attend classes. This includes two types of documentation: medical documentation and certifications and trainings. All medical documentation is submitted, tracked and verified through the Wilce Student Health Center. Deadlines for each requirement is specific to the student’s program, curriculum plan and mode of instruction (i.e. online or in-person). You will be considered non-compliant if one or more of the requirements are unfulfilled. If you are non-compliant, you will be prohibited from attending clinical and/or health assessment. Please select your program below for your specific requirements, submission instructions and deadlines.

Compliance overview:

  1. You are required to maintain a compliant status as long as you are enrolled in the College of Nursing.
  2. The Office of Student Affairs and Success will send email notifications to those considered non-compliant or at-risk of becoming non-compliant. The at-risk status indicates a requirement will be expiring in the near future. Upon receiving the compliance notification to your osu.edu email account, it is your responsibility to take immediate action.
  3. You must follow the submission instructions for each requirement. Compliance status will not be updated unless the correct documentation is submitted per instructions. Please allow time for processing as processing does not occur immediately upon submission. It can take up to 8-10 business days during peak season to process documentation. Your compliance status will be updated if you follow submission instructions and once documentation is fully processed. You can access the submission instructions one of two ways:
    1. By selecting your program specific page
      or
    2. By logging into The Beacon. Please note compliance status will not be updated in the portal unless the correct documentation is submitted per instructions.
  4. The Beacon provides a personalized summary of your compliance requirements with links and instructions for completing each item, as well as your curriculum plan.
  5. A medical or religious exemption is requested for any immunization requirement, the exemption must be submitted Student Life Disability Services.

Compliance appointment scheduling

  • Drug Screening — by appointment only

    Wilce Student Health Center Hours:
    Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4:30 p.m.

    Appointments for drug screens can be made online through MyBuckMD or by calling 614-292-4321.

    To schedule online, log in to MyBuckMD with your OSU name.# and password, select “Appt. Scheduling” from the top navigation bar, then choose “Schedule Appt.” to see the available services and appointment times. The reason for the appointment will be “Drug Screen Required by School” when selecting options from the list. Drug screens will NOT be able to be combined with other appointments for a Preventive Medicine service, so a completely separate appointment will need to be scheduled in order to do the drug screen at Wilce.

  • Health professional student vaccine/titer/TB testing - appointment now required
    The Wilce Student Health Center remains open. They offer vaccination services on the following days and times:
    Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Background check requirement
    Fingerprinting services at the Ohio State Office of Human Resources have resumed, and are by appointment only. Please visit your program specific page below, click on BCI and FBI Background Check to view instructions regarding how to make an appointment and hours of operation.

    BSN students admitted to the Autumn 2024 semester will be fingerprinted in the College of Nursing during the first week of classes in August. Do not complete this requirement early. More information will be provided at the Compliance Touchpoint Session in July.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

New PhD students are responsible for ensuring they are compliant for program compliance requirements. The program compliance requirements, deadlines and submission instructions for the traditional PhD program are listed below. The COVID-19 vaccine primary series is required for students in a clinical or immersion experience, health assessment course, or by an agency hosting educational experiences.

Students seeking a medical or religious exemption must complete this form and submit it to Wilce via MyBuckMD for review. Personal exemptions for the covid vaccine are no longer accepted by the College of Nursing. Although a medical or religious exemption may be approved by the Student Health Center and the College of Nursing, the exemption may not be accepted by a clinical agency. The College of Nursing cannot guarantee that you will be placed in a clinical that accepts COVID-19 vaccination exemptions.
