Path2BSN

by Kelsey Bonacci

The College of Nursing has partnered with several Ohio community colleges to create Path2BSN, a program that allows students to complete an associate degree in nursing, then transition to Ohio State to complete an online Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The program provides guidance throughout the student’s journey so that they will get the necessary prerequisites, pick up extra classes needed, maintain a high grade-point average and have a smooth transition experience.

For Ohio State, Path2BSN provides a way to help with the national shortage of qualified healthcare workers, and to help students who want to further their education. Here, four Path2BSN students tell what the program means to them.

What coursework did you like best?
I specifically found the Evidence-based Practice course and Healthcare Informatics enjoyable. Learning these both made me more well-versed in my nursing practice. The Failure to Rescue elective course was very applicable to advance my skills with patients.

Benefits of the program?
It allows for a smooth transition and you are supported every step of the way by Ohio State.

What was your online experience like?
The faculty were always just a message away and always willing to help with any problems that came about ... I also liked the Live Well initiative and felt that my well-being was important to them as well as my education. I liked the group work and discussion … you get to put your creative minds together and learn about other peoples’ journeys through nursing. I highly recommend this program to anyone eligible to take advantage of it.

Path2BSN has been a great experience! I have found the professors to be kind and willing to help whenever I have questions. The online portion is ideal as someone who works almost full time and is still completing an associate degree. I love online learning.

What coursework did you enjoy?
I have really loved learning about EBP and Health Informatics this fall. It has really built on the basic information I received in my associate degree classes. I feel supported and cared for in obtaining a higher degree ... like I am becoming a lifelong learner.

Anything else?
I feel prepared and confident that I have been equipped well to enter the nursing profession.

Why did you enroll in Path2BSN?
Having a BSN is a stepping stone to continue my education even further, such as eventually completing a master’s degree in nursing. Also, the hospital I work for is a Magnet recognized organization, which means that they are required to have a certain percent of nurses with a bachelor’s degree. Completing this program gave me the chance to help keep my knowledge in the field of nursing up to date.

What coursework did you enjoy?
The evidence-based group projects ... hearing different perspectives from students can really improve your understanding of a topic.

What was your online experience like?
Every faculty member was extremely professional and seemed passionate about the class they were teaching. I always felt that I learned a lot from each class.

Anything you’d like to share with others about the program?
For those that are considering going back to school for their BSN, I would like to say that in the moment it may feel overwhelming to be working and going to school, but the benefits of completing a BSN make it well worth all the effort that you put into it!

My experience has been really good! Applying was easy, and Ohio State was efficient and fair in evaluating my transcripts, not just from my RN program but also from a previous bachelor’s degree. My advisors have been friendly, knowledgeable, organized and easily accessible.

Why did you enroll?
Ohio State’s RN-to-BSN is the best in the country!

What coursework did you enjoy?
My favorite course has been Evidence-based Coaching in Interprofessional Practice. The role of “coach” in healthcare is emerging ... it involves helping clients set goals and helping to keep them motivated.

What benefits do you see of the program?
“Because I’m not as young as I used to be, and have ambitions of getting at least a master’s in nursing, being able to get this jump start was great.” Every one of my RN-to-BSN courses has involved [online] interaction with classmates. They’re definitely an impressive group: bright, articulate and able to draw fruitfully on their work and clinical experiences.
