College of Nursing’s online master’s, two key specialties rank in nation’s top five

U.S. News & World Report also places online bachelor’s programs among top 5

New 2025 rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report place the online Master of Science degree and two specializations – Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) – offered by The Ohio State University College of Nursing among the five best programs of their kind in the nation.

Ohio State’s online master’s in nursing program now ranks #3 overall and #2 among public institutions. This marks the 11th consecutive year in which this program ranks among the country’s top six of its kind. U.S. News & World Report ranks online master’s programs according to student engagement, faculty credentials and training, services and technologies, student excellence and peer assessment.

Both the FNP (#5 overall) and the PMHNP (#3 overall) specializations rank #1 among public institutions in the U.S.

“We strive every day to deliver the very best education and experiences for our students. For these new rankings to place these programs as best-in-class among public institutions nationally is a testament to the students, faculty, staff, alumni, preceptors and partners involved who answer their calling to care every day,” said Karen Rose, PhD, RN, FGSA, FNAP, FAAN, dean and professor of the College of Nursing. “When the world calls for confident, competent, caring individuals to change healthcare for the better, Buckeye nurses answer. It is our honor to teach them, mentor them, inspire them and watch them succeed.”

U.S. News & World Report also released new rankings for online bachelor’s programs, measuring student engagement, faculty credentials and training, student services and technology and peer assessment. Ohio State’s programs – for which the College of Nursing’s RN to BSN comprises the highest enrollment – ranked #5 in the country, up from #7 last year.

“We are so proud to host a sought-after RN to BSN program that engages working nurses in a flexible, online setting that allows them to work at the bedside and grow their knowledge and skills in partnership with our world-class faculty,” said Rebecca Lorenz, PhD, RN, senior associate dean for academic affairs and educational innovation and associate professor in the College of Nursing. “The future of healthcare depends on the confidence and ability of well-educated, evidence-based nurses who innovate and problem-solve in ways that benefit all people in all communities.”
