The new LPN to BSN program at the College of Nursing was designed for LPNs to obtain their BSN. Three current students, James Williams, Toni Hall and Colleen M. Barrett, shared with us about their experiences in the program.
“I believe this program is an answer to many prayers,” Barrett said. She became an LPN in 2018 and worked in OBGYN private practice and two of Central Ohio's largest FQHCs before finding her stride in a Level II Trauma Center/Emergency Department. “The path of becoming a bachelor's prepared RN in two years at one of the top nursing colleges in the country and at a low cost drew me to the program.”
“There’s nothing I wanted to do more than get back into pediatrics,” said Hall. “That’s entirely what started me on my journey to be a nurse.” Hall had left pediatrics after 20 years to work elsewhere but realized she could come back to pediatrics with a BSN.
“After being out of school for over two decades, you see a lot of options out there. Most are intimidating and lack support,” she shared. She added that she is now receiving a great deal of support, encouragement and “acknowledgement of wanting me to succeed.” Hall aims to make a difference in children's lives through her degree, answering her calling to care once again.
Williams, a geriatric nurse for 11 years, wants to be a trauma RN in an emergency department. “The program allows me to maintain my current job of seven years while pursuing further education towards a BSN,” he said. “It provides me with the opportunity to work and remain engaged in activities important to me.”
It takes some prioritizing, he added, but he’s glad the opportunity is available. He plans to continue his education and become a certified nurse practitioner.
Through its support, encouragement and efficiency, the LPN to BSN program allows passionate individuals like Barrett, Hall and Williams to advance their careers while working towards making an impact in healthcare.
