New Accelerated BSN program welcomes first cohort

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (aBSN) program is for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field who want to pursue a career in nursing. Two current students, Alix Aboussouan and Meng Zhang, told us about their experiences in the program.

Alix Aboussouan previously studied clinical psychology. As an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), she performed tasks ranging from transferring patients to providing life support. “I am excited to expand my skill set and continue learning how to care for patients within a hospital setting,” she said. “I am eager to learn about all the different facets of nursing.”

While working in psychology was very rewarding, she felt something was missing. After completing her master’s in clinical psychology, she decided it was time for a change. “I have always respected the nurses in my life and wanted to be in a career where I feel like I can make an impact on someone’s life,” Aboussouan explained. Although she hopes to work in an emergency department, she is open to gaining experience in different areas of nursing.

“The program promotes the idea of wellness both inside and outside of the job,” she said.  “I am very happy with the balance and feel very supported to do well while maintaining my mental health.”

Meng Zhang, a personal trainer, interned in cardiac rehabilitation for three months. During her internship she loved working directly with patients but felt limited in her role. Previously, Zhang studied exercise science education at Ohio State. “Knowing more about my patients allows me to better advocate for them and provide the best and most appropriate care,” Zhang said. “I chose nursing for this reason and because it is such a flexible career that can align with my interests.”

Zhang is excited about the program because she can stay at her alma mater for her nursing education, learning from Ohio State faculty and nurses at the Wexner Medical Center. She is still figuring out which setting she wants to specialize in, but her interests are in the intensive care unit and progressive care unit.

“I feel like the program does its best to ensure and promote good work/life balance practices,” she said. “I am excited to see what the next 18 months will bring.” With its support, this program helps students achieve a new dream.
