MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Bernadette MelnykRecently I experienced a valuable lesson in gratitude. In July, my daughter, Angela, was involved in a terrible car accident. She sustained multiple injuries in the crash, including a displaced hip and a broken femur. I rushed back from Rochester, New York where our CTEP team was doing an evidence-based practice immersion to be by her side and spent the week between visits to the hospital and caring for my now eight-month-old grandchild (who is an absolute joy). Although Angela has a long and challenging road to recovery ahead of her, we feel so fortunate that she is alive and wasn't more seriously injured.

Events like this make you stop and appreciate what you have in life, as it could all be gone in the blink of an eye. For me, it was a reminder of the importance of building gratitude into every one of our days. Did you know that having an attitude of gratitude doesn't just make you feel good—it's actually good for your health and wellness, too? Multiple studies support that higher levels of gratitude are linked to better heart health, less depression, less fatigue, improved sleep and a stronger immune system. Before bed, make it a habit of writing down three things you're grateful for and why. I am definitely grateful for each of you, our fantastic alums, as you are truly making such an impact across the world. I am so proud of you. Focusing on the positive in our lives leads to noticing more positive things and experiencing more joy. And that is definitely something to appreciate!

Fondly,

Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/PMHNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN
Associate Vice President for Health Promotion
University Chief Wellness Officer
