Tate, Weberg, two College of Nursing alumni selected as AAN Fellows

Militello, Tornwall also selected for prestigious national fellowships

The American Academy of Nursing (AAN) announced that Judith Tate, PhD, RN, ATS-F, and Daniel Weberg, PhD, MHI, RN, faculty at The Ohio State University College of Nursing, are among the 250 distinguished nurse leaders selected to be inducted into its 2022 Class of Fellows. The inductees will be recognized for their significant contributions to health and health care at the AAN’s annual Health Policy Conference, taking place on October 27-29, 2022 in Washington, D.C.

Two of the college’s alumni were also selected among the 2022 class: Susan Brammer, who is a professor educator at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing, and Maribeth Massie, who works as program director and assistant professor in the Columbia University School of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia program.

Tate is a tenured associate professor in the college’s Center for Healthy Aging, Self-Management and Complex Care, with an academic and scholarly focus on symptom science and critical and complex illness. She has a substantial background in acute and critical care nursing, clinical research methods, research project management and more than 20 years of experience in patient-centered research in critical care. Her research expertise focuses on mechanical ventilation, patient and family needs, symptom recognition and management and cognitive and psychological sequelae of critical illness. She currently leads a clinical trial funded by the National Institute on Aging to help patients adapt to cognitive problems that they experience during recovery from an ICU stay.

Weberg is an expert in nursing, healthcare innovation and human-centered patient design with extensive clinical experience in emergency departments, acute in-patient hospital settings and academia. He served as the Vice President for Transformation Services at Ascension, supporting 60,000 nurses and 140+ facilities in modernizing nursing technology, developing new care models and measuring innovation outcomes. He is on the editorial board for Nursing Administration Quarterly and has authored two dozen peer-reviewed articles and two textbooks, including Evidence-Based Innovation Leadership for Health Professions and Leadership in Nursing Practice.

Tate, Weberg, Brammer, Kim and Massie join approximately 70 FAANs – including 31 active faculty – among Ohio State College of Nursing faculty, emeriti faculty and alumni.

“As the American Academy of Nursing’s President, it gives me great pride to announce the largest class of Fellows since the organization began nearly 50 years ago,” said Kenneth R. White, PhD, RN, AGACNP, ACHPN, FACHE, FAAN. “At a time when investments in, and policy to address, health equity, innovation, and access are paramount, the Academy is thrilled to welcome these dynamic and courageous nurse leaders who will support our collective vision of healthy lives for all people. Induction in the Academy is a powerful moment in a nurse’s career. When we gather this fall, to award the Fellowship credential, I look forward to celebrating each Fellow’s incredible accomplishments that have improved the wellbeing of communities across the globe.”

Two College of Nursing faculty were inducted into other prestigious professional fellowships recently:

  • Joni Tornwall, PhD, RN, is one of 20 nurse educators selected for the 16th class of Fellows inducted this September into the Academy of Nursing Education by the National League for Nursing.
  • Lisa Militello, PhD, MPH, RN, was inducted as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) at the AANP National Conference in Orlando, FL, in June. Militello was one of 40 new Fellows recognized for making a positive and profound impact on national and global health.
