Welcome Week: Adalai McGarvey finds community far from home
For Adalai McGarvey of Middleburg, Florida, coming to Ohio State was a chance to reconnect with family, experience life beyond her hometown and become more independent.
As part of our Welcome Week series, we’re getting to know the students who make up the Buckeye nursing community.
“I left a lot of my family here in Ohio when we moved to Florida when I was five,” she said.
Her family’s connection to Ohio State, along with the university’s community and facilities, made the decision to attend feel right.
McGarvey also always knew she wanted to become a nurse. Growing up as one of 11 siblings, she was one of the oldest and helped care for her younger brothers and sisters.
“I definitely always knew that I was going to be in nursing,” she said.
At Ohio State, clinical experiences have been one of the most valuable parts of her education.
“It has to be clinicals,” she said. “I got to know so many new people and experienced so many new things because of that.”
