Ohio State nurse-led glucose management model named Edge Runner

American Academy of Nursing recognizes nurse-led model demonstrating improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare costs

A nurse-led model developed by The Ohio State University College of Nursing faculty to improve glucose management for critically ill patients has been named an Edge Runner by the American Academy of Nursing (Academy). 

The Hybrid CGM+POC Inpatient Glucose Management Model, developed by Eileen Faulds, PhD, APRN-CNP, assistant professor at the college, combines continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) with point-of-care (POC) testing and nursing protocols.

In a 100-patient clinical trial, patients using the model spent 11% more time within the target glucose range of 70-180 mg/dL, or more than 2.5 additional hours per day. The model also reduced severe hyperglycemia and cut nursing time spent on glucose monitoring by approximately 35 minutes per patient per day for those requiring hourly monitoring.

The model has been used with more than 250 critically ill patients over six years. Its implementation led The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to become the first U.S. health system to formally approve off-label CGM use as a standard of care across critical care environments.

The Academy's Edge Runner program recognizes innovative, nurse-designed models that improve healthcare quality, reduce costs and enhance patient care.

Faulds will be recognized at the Academy's Health Policy Conference Oct. 8-10 in Washington, D.C.
