College of Nursing honored with 9th consecutive national HEED Award

INSIGHT Into Diversity recognizes college for long-standing leadership in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the nation’s oldest and largest diversity-focused magazine and website in higher education, honored The Ohio State University College of Nursing today with its ninth consecutive Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award.

“The power of our college’s culture lies in the belief that no matter where you’re from, the color of your skin or the experiences in your background, you can be a Buckeye nurse and find inspiration, support and success here,” said Angela Alston, DNP, MPH, APRN-CNP, FNAP, assistant clinical professor and chief diversity officer at the College of Nursing. “We are humbled and motivated by this continued recognition of our growth and leadership as a college, and we are committed to building upon this foundation of support to further sustain an inclusive environment that benefits us all.”

The HEED Award recognizes institutions of higher education for their outstanding commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The selection process includes a comprehensive and rigorous application that explores student and employee recruitment and retention, as well as leadership support of diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Among the initiatives highlighted in the College of Nursing’s application is the Summer Institute for Future Nurses, which has been active for nearly 15 years and acquaints high school students with nursing and wellness professions. Students from across the nation experience hands-on labs, campus tours and faculty guidance spanning three days to discover the opportunities before them in healthcare.

“We share our university’s core commitment to intentionally foster a sense of belonging where all are valued and to address the individual and systemic effects of bias and discrimination,” said Karen Rose, PhD, RN, FGSA, FNAP, FAAN, dean and professor at the College of Nursing. “The nursing and healthcare leaders whom we educate, prepare, inspire and learn from must combine empathy and compassion with their tangible skillsets to address their patients holistically and with the dignity they deserve. We appreciate INSIGHT Into Diversity for continuing to hold our college up as a national role model, and we pledge to continue our progress. It is a vital part of how we answer our calling to care.”

INSIGHT Into Diversity honored seven health science programs at Ohio State with HEED Awards for 2024: the Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy, Public Health and Veterinary Medicine.
