What is an adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner?

An adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (AGPCNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who provides comprehensive, continuous and preventative healthcare for adolescents (typically beginning at age 13) through older adulthood. The AGPCNP role emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention and the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic conditions across the adult lifespan. They deliver primary care in diverse outpatient settings, including family and internal medicine practices, community health centers, long-term care and assisted living facilities, and specialty clinics such as cardiology and endocrinology. In addition to their clinical responsibilities, AGPCNPs contribute to education, research and policy initiatives that advance high-quality, person-centered care.
