The Ohio State University College of Nursing ranks No. 6 nationally in NIH funding

College leads Ohio and Big Ten in federal research support

New rankings measuring National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant funding among schools of nursing nationwide show that The Ohio State University College of Nursing has risen to No. 6 in the nation and No. 1 among Ohio schools of nursing for fiscal year 2025, reinforcing its position as a national leader in nursing research.

According to data released by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR), in 2025, the college secured over $12.8 million in NIH funding. BRIMR is an independent nonprofit organization that compiles and analyzes annual NIH funding data for colleges and universities across the United States.

“Achieving a top-six national ranking in NIH funding reflects the extraordinary work of our faculty, nurse scientists, research partners and students,” said Karen Rose, PhD, RN, FGSA, FNAP, FAAN, dean and professor of the College of Nursing. “Their commitment to advancing science and improving health outcomes across the lifespan drives meaningful change for individuals, families and communities.”

Faculty research supported by NIH funding spans a wide range of critical health priorities, including maternal and infant health, chronic disease management, aging, health equity and innovative models of care delivery. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and community partnerships, researchers are translating scientific discoveries into real-world solutions that strengthen patient care and population health.

“Our researchers’ success with NIH funding speaks to the strength of the science and relevance of their work,” said Susie Breitenstein, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and senior associate dean for research. “This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing evidence-based solutions that improve health and well-being locally and globally.”

The 2025 rankings highlight the college’s continued momentum and national impact in advancing nursing science and addressing pressing health challenges.
