Biography
Dr. Hu’s research program focuses on family dyad-centered interventions to improve diabetes self-management and glycemic control, with particular emphasis on Black/African American and Hispanic American populations. Her work also addresses social determinants of health and health disparities in diabetes and cardiovascular disease among Black/African adults, and the roles of dyadic relationships, social support on glycemic control, and cognition in older adults with diabetes.
Dr. Hu’s research on dyadic interventions for diabetes has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Currently, she leads a federally funded project by the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, working with an interdisciplinary research team to examine the effectiveness of a family dyad-focused diabetes intervention for Black/African American adults with type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Hu’s work to improve glycemic control and health-related quality of life among minority populations has received national recognition and is featured on the NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Ecosystem of Health Disparities and Minority Health Resources, Intervention website (Family-Based Diabetes Intervention for Hispanic Americans). She has authored more than 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has served as a grant reviewer on NIH study section. Dr. Hu earned her PhD and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona. She was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2014.
