Ohio State Nursing DNP Graduate Develops Toolkit That Increased Smoking Cessation Referrals in Lung Cancer Screening
The toolkit was associated with an 18% to 20% increase in smoking cessation referrals among patients in a lung cancer screening clinic.
A toolkit co-developed by Ohio State Doctor of Nursing Practice graduate Kris Mathey, DNP, APRN-CNP, AOCNP®, was recently highlighted in the ONS Voice News Magazine.
The toolkit was associated with an 18% to 20% increase in smoking cessation referrals among patients in a lung cancer screening clinic. Developed as Mathey's DNP graduate project, the intervention combined provider education, communication training and standardized scripting to improve referrals to evidence-based tobacco cessation services and increase documentation of smoking cessation counseling.
The project was supported by Diane Von Ah, PhD, RN, FNAP, FAAN, professor, Mildred E. Newton Endowed Chair and co-leader of the Cancer Control Program at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center.
