OPINION: The invisible toll of Alzheimer’s care
The Golden Buckeye Center for Dementia Caregiving is an Ohio facility centered around providing free guidance and support for those who care for a loved one with dementia.
As a volunteer at a memory care facility, I directly engage with individuals with Alzheimer’s and witness the extent of care that must be provided. I remember entering the room to an extremely upset resident, but after talking to her, asking about her day and telling her about mine, she began to smile. The effect of one-on-one connection and individualized attention became apparent to me. I noticed the sheer number of staff members present in the room. Within the hour, most residents are given their medicine, the table is set for lunch, and several individuals are assisted with daily living activities.
