Message from the Dean and Vice President for Health Promotion
It’s an exciting new year at the College of Nursing! Already, we’ve had some great new adventures, including a visit from astronaut Greg Johnson to our Innovation Studio. It all started when Greg’s friend Tara King, our College of Nursing director of assessment and evaluation, sent him information on the Innovation Studio, saying it reminded her of the work he did with the International Space Station’s science lab. Thanks to her reaching out, we now have an exciting partnership with that lab, and they’ve challenged students, faculty and staff to innovate something that might be sent to the Space Station itself. It just goes to show that a small step can sometimes lead to big – even astronomical – results!
We’re thrilled to have Dianne Morrison-Beedy coming to join our faculty as our new Centennial Professor of Nursing and chief talent and global strategy officer. I’m also extremely proud to announce that Cindy Anderson, our associate dean for academic affairs and educational innovation, has been chosen as president-elect of the Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS). You can read more about our outstanding faculty and their achievements below, and about a new column on wellness specifically for nurses that I’m writing for American Nurse Today.
Remember, February is National Heart Month. Nurses do a great job of caring for everyone else, but often do not prioritize their own health. I urge you to take action today to safeguard your heart health, both for yourself and for all of those you love. Evidence supports that just a few healthy lifestyle behaviors, including 30 minutes of physical activity per week, five fruits and vegetables per day, and regular stress reduction activities can go a long way in reducing chronic diseases. The small steps you take today for your own wellness can ripple outward toward a bright, healthy future. Go Bucks!
Fondly,

Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/PMHNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN Vice President for Health Promotion University Chief Wellness Officer Dean and Professor, College of Nursing Professor of Pediatrics & Psychiatry, College of Medicine Executive Director, the Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for EBP The Ohio State University

This unique challenge, issued only to The Ohio State University, asks students, faculty and staff to pitch ideas to develop a product, service or solution with social impact that utilizes the International Space Station. Astronaut Greg Johnson, president and executive director of CASIS, attended to officially propose CASIS’s challenge.

New wellness series in American Nurse Today
American Nurse Today is excited to have College of Nursing Dean and University Chief Wellness Officer Bernadette Melnyk contribute a series of articles on the nine dimensions of wellness, found online and in their print magazine. The first article provides an overview of the nine dimensions—physical, emotional, financial, intellectual, career, social, creative, environmental, and spiritual. In subsequent articles, Melnyk and her co-author Susan Neale, MFA, will take deep dives into each dimension, providing nurses with insightful instruction for improving their overall wellness. Check it out for great wellness tips!

Mary Howard, DNP, RN, NEA-BC
Ohio State degrees: MS (1993), DNP (2014)
Current role: Executive Director, University Hospital East
Professionally, I am proud of and humbled to have had the opportunity to be a part of the senior leadership team at University Hospital East. I joined the Ohio State family in 2003 as a nursing director at University Hospital. I had the fortunate opportunity to come to East to serve as the Chief Nursing Officer in 2007, then moved into the Associate Executive Director position a couple of years ago. I became the Executive Director in October 2017. I never imagined taking the reins from Elizabeth Seely, an amazing leader who has done a tremendous job at East!
I am extremely proud of and value the leadership team, caring staff and faculty at East. Our leadership team is respectful and supportive of one another and strives to build consensus to achieve our goals. I am proud to lead a team of healthcare professionals that are driven each and every day to provide the best possible care to our patients and visitors. I am dedicated to continuing to be an active member of our community – personally and professionally. I will continue to be involved in important work, boards, agencies and churches to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
Interesting fact: I placed 3rd in a bench-press competition, once upon a time.

February is Heart Health Month
Commit to making one healthy lifestyle behavior change to prevent heart disease. Choose a healthy eating plan, one low in trans-fats and high in fruits, vegetables and fiber. Participate in at least 30 minutes five days a week of moderate intensity physical activity, such as brisk walking. Sit less, stand more as sitting three hours a day increases your risk for heart disease. Participate in biometric screenings and heart-healthy activities and events at nursing.osu.edu/heartmonth.
Want more wellness? Read "Practical tips for achieving emotional wellness" – no-nonsense health advice from our dean and university chief wellness officer, Bern Melnyk. An Ohio State Alumni magazine web exclusive.
