ECLIPSE

“I loved working as a team and really got to see how each profession could contribute to patient-centered care.”

“It was very cool to interact with other professions and learn more about the whole team care.”

“It was eye-opening and beneficial to learn the scope of other professionals I will be working with.”

The award-winning* Excellence in Clinical Interprofessional Simulation Education (ECLIPSE) program engages students from ten health science professions and elevates the confident and competence of budding healthcare clinicians and leaders from the university’s seven health science colleges and other healthcare-related academic programs. The College of Nursing conducts the program’s simulation sessions at its Technology Learning Complex (TLC). Students at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels from nursing, medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition, respiratory therapy, social work, and speech and language pathology all come together to build foundational knowledge and competency in evidence-based practice and collaborative care.

A representative sample from each profession participates in each simulation session. The objectives of the simulation are to create collaboration through respect and understanding of roles of a variety of healthcare team members. The emphasis is on developing interprofessional communication and patient-focused teamwork skills in a non-threatening environment. The patient cases for the simulation are designed with the goals of creating contributing roles for each participating health and social science student, as well as providing multiple collaboration opportunities among the different professions.

Interprofessional experiences are integrated throughout all levels of the College of Nursing. Evidence supports teaching practices that incorporate a diversity of thought to enhance critical thinking and broaden the perspective of the student. ECLIPSE is an immersive experience in alignment with the university’s BuckIPE program.
