Message from the Dean and Vice President for Health Promotion

Bernadette MelnykWhat a transformative time for the College of Nursing! 600 graduates, the largest cohort in our college’s history, are leaving us to become agents of change and innovation in nursing, and I am incredibly proud of each of them as they start their new journeys. It’s deeply inspiring to imagine how much healing, lifesaving and game changing they will bring to the world collectively!

We’re very excited to announce that the Pitzer Family Foundation has made a generous gift to the college in memory of our alumna and faculty member, Martha S. Pitzer. Many of our alumni who knew Dr. Pitzer remember her commitment and passion for women and children’s health, and you can read below about how we plan to use that gift to further her mission.

As our student body changes every year, so does our faculty and staff. Recruitment was highly successful this year – seven awesome new tenured/tenure track faculty and one new regular clinical track faculty member who will bring incredible talent to our fantastic college are now part of our College of Nursing family. Please help me in congratulating Katy Trombitas, who was recently promoted to senior director of development. We are so fortunate in that she will continue working with our college while also overseeing the College of Medicine development team. We’re pleased to welcome a new terrific Director of Development, Courtney Shaul. And, on May 1, we welcomed another very special new Buckeye, too – baby boy Evan Michael Pelasky, the son of Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement Colleen Pelasky and her husband, Ken.

I hope you’ll make this summer a time of new beginnings for yourself and for your well-being. If you are in the neighborhood, please come visit us. Go Bucks!

Fondly,

Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, APRN-CNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN

Ohio State degrees: 1977, 1989 MS

Current role: Interventional Radiology Nurse Practitioner (semi-retired); Member, Franklin County (Ohio) Board of Health

Professionally, I am proud of serving in clinical and administrative positions that have enabled me to enhance patient care in a variety of healthcare settings. Working as a staff nurse, clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner taught me the value and importance of nursing to our patients. These clinical experiences encouraged me to find ways to advance nursing and patient healthcare, which led me outside of the hospital to serve on organizations at the local, state and national levels. I recently served as president of the Ohio Nurses Association and am currently a member of the Franklin County, Ohio Board of Health. As a result of this position, my current passion is promoting the Nurses on Boards Coalition to improve the health of communities and the nation by increasing the number of nurses serving on boards.

Interesting fact: My husband and two sons are also Ohio State alumni.
