Message from the Dean and Vice President for Health Promotion
As graduates of the College of Nursing, you are lights for the world, many of you providing exemplary healthcare for others all across the globe. It warms my heart to think of the many Ohio State nurses and wellness professionals out there, making a difference every day in the lives of others.
Yet, too often we healthcare providers don’t take good care of ourselves. The saying, “You can’t take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself first” has now been exemplified in a national study of United States nurses. The study, which you can read more about below, found that nurses in sub-optimal mental and physical health were 26 to 71 percent more likely to make medical errors. That’s important news, and points both to the need for nurses to take better care of themselves, and for hospital and other healthcare administrators to start making their employees’ health a priority. There is so much we can do for each other, from implementing physical and mental health programs in the workplace to taking the time to encourage each other in our health goals. I urge you to take time for your own self-care this holiday season and beyond. The smallest changes you make could be the beginning of a healthier lifestyle, and that means good health and great care for others, too.
You’ll want to read this newsletter to find out about the new guidelines for high blood pressure from the American Heart Association, the College of Nursing’s new deadlines for application for graduate degrees, and awards our faculty have received, including two March of Dimes’ Nurses of the Year. You also can find out more about what the college has been up to by watching two videos, one celebrating the Fuld summit, and one made on our campus by AACN-TV to tout Ohio State at American Association of Colleges of Nursing conferences. We’re excited, too, about the redesign of our Transformations magazine. If it’s not in your mailbox yet, see below for how to get a copy.
I wish all of you hearts full of joy and peace this holiday season along with a happy, healthy New Year full of blessings!
Be well,
Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/PMHNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN Vice President for Health Promotion University Chief Wellness Officer Dean and Professor, College of Nursing Professor of Pediatrics & Psychiatry, College of Medicine
