OCTOBER 2017

Message from the Dean and Vice President for Health Promotion
It has been a remarkably exciting October here at the College of Nursing! It touched my heart to see so many of you at Homecoming this year. As I said at my State of the College address, I could not ask for a better team — the college and you, our alumni! The weather was beautiful as the class of ’67 celebrated their 50th reunion and alumni from every year cheered the Buckeyes on to victory. During homecoming weekend, I also flew to Washington, D.C. to see three of our outstanding faculty inducted as Fellows in the American Academy of Nursing. It’s spectacular to see Ohio State from the air — to see how much we’ve grown, and to feel that rush of familiarity and excitement when the "Shoe" appears below. A warm and heartfelt thanks to all who came home to the College of Nursing for the weekend to celebrate the special bond we share as Buckeyes.
Also this month we hosted our landmark inaugural summit, “Transforming Healthcare Through Evidence-based Practice” for the new Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for EBP in Nursing & Healthcare, kicking off what is sure to be a remarkable legacy for this institute. A panel of over 60 national healthcare experts from 42 national professional organizations and federal agencies convened in a forum to inform the summit on their recommendations for accelerating EBP throughout the nation and the world. You can read more about these exciting events below.
Remember, October is breast cancer awareness month. Be sure to receive regular screening and see my Buckeye Wellness Tip below for strategies to help prevent breast cancer. For inspiration, read below about Kris Catton, a survivor of breast cancer who has devoted her life to helping other cancer patients.
Wishing you great health and hearts full of joy this season. Go Bucks!

Buckeye Nurses welcomed home for Homecoming
More than 300 nursing alumni and guests returned to campus for Homecoming 2017. Festivities kicked off with a breakfast in Newton Hall and concluded with a tailgate lunch before the Buckeyes took on the Maryland Terrapins. In between, alumni and guests enjoyed Dean Melnyk's State of the College address, a continuing education session on the opioid crisis, a healthy cooking demonstration on desserts, and tours of the college's technology learning complex (TLC) and wet lab. The Class of 1967 was also invited to a reunion luncheon hosted by the college, and a special celebration of the 50-year class hosted by President Drake. See photos from Homecoming on Flickr.

Larissa DeMarco, BSN, RN, OCN; PCCN Alumna
Ohio State degrees: BSN (2011)
Recent award: 2017 Central Ohio Woman of the Year, Central Ohio Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
Current role: Clinic nurse in Hematology Oncology Clinic at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Institute. Primary clinic nurse for Dr. Farrukh Awan caring for patients with lymphoma and chronic lymphoma leukemia (CLL).
Professionally, I am proud of: In May, I was awarded the 2017 Clinical Nurse Excellence Award for The James. What a surprise it was to find out I was nominated by a group of my colleagues for this prestigious award! During my six years as a nurse, I have also obtained dual certifications, OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) and PCCN (Progressive Care Certified Nurse, which I now hold as alumni status).
Interesting fact: I met my husband during our last quarter before graduation at the College of Nursing. We have both been RNs at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center since graduation. I started my nursing career as a new graduate intern at The James and worked as a bedside nurse on the acute leukemia and progressive care unit for four years before my current role in outpatient.

Breast Cancer Awareness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Many factors over the course of a lifetime can influence your breast cancer risk. While you can’t change some of these factors, such as getting older or your family history, you can lower your risk of breast cancer by engaging in 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week, maintaining a healthy weight, eating at least 5 fruits and vegetables each day, not smoking, and limiting alcohol intake. This wellness tip is brought to you by University Chief Wellness Officer Bernadette Melnyk.
Want more wellness? Read "Take control of your financial wellness today" – no-nonsense wellness advice from our dean and university chief wellness officer, Bern Melnyk. An Ohio State Alumni magazine web exclusive.
