Message from the Dean
I hope you have some awesome plans for this summer—perhaps traveling, relaxing by the pool, or getting some great outdoor exercise—and that the summer months allow you some special time to connect with your family and friends, find some extra unwind time, and cultivate your dreams.
I am excited to announce that registration is now open for our landmark inaugural National Summit on Transforming Health Care through Evidence-based Practice on October 18 to 20, during which time we will formally launch our new Helene Fuld Health Trust Institute for Evidence-based Practice (EBP) in Nursing and Healthcare. Participants at the Summit will be the first to hear “hot off the press” recommendations of leaders from over 30 national professional organizations, federal agencies, and high profile healthcare entities. Right here in Columbus, Ohio, we are enhancing the quality and safety of healthcare by clinicians, teachers, researchers, consumers, industry leaders and organizations. This dream has been in the planning stages for years and is finally coming to fulfillment, thanks to visionary faculty, staff and alumni, who worked hard to make it happen. I hope you’ll join us for this groundbreaking event. We’re also excited to welcome another outstanding faculty member Dr. Kathy Wright, who will be our new chief diversity officer.
Food for thought: By now, most of us have been made aware of the need for sunscreen (30+ SPF!) before heading out under the summer sun, because we know a little sunburn can lead to a lot of damage later on. But did you know that just a little smoking can be dangerous as well? Read below about a recent study we conducted, which revealed that people who smoke only occasionally still face some of the same health risks as habitual smokers.
Wishing you a summer filled with health, happiness and big dreams!
Fondly,

Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/PMHNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN Vice President for Health Promotion University Chief Wellness Officer Dean and Professor, College of Nursing Professor of Pediatrics & Psychiatry, College of Medicine Executive Director, the Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for EBP The Ohio State University

Janel Olberding, RN, BSN
Ohio State degrees: BSN 2015
Current role:Medical-surgical nurse and full-time student in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Ohio State
Professionally, I am proud of my unit and coworkers. We opened up a medical surgical unit composed of nearly 90 percent new-graduate nurses almost two years ago now. I have never seen a unit of people come together so well in order to prove that as new grads we could provide safe, effective care for our patients. We have a really great bond because of it. We also had a great manager, CNL and CNS to help with the process.
Interesting fact: I love my hometown! I come from Fort Loramie, Ohio, in the middle of nowhere. Home of the Country Concert and some of the best small-town people. I eventually want to find myself back in that rural area as a family practice provider.

Reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke
One out of every three adults has high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke. To help keep your blood pressure at a healthy level, be sure to be physically active most days of the week, limit sodium intake to under 1,500 mg per day, manage your stress, limit alcohol and be sure to take your medications as prescribed.
