MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
|
|
|
I want to take this opportunity to share some exciting news with all of you. Recently, Ohio State teamed up with the Women's Heart Alliance (WHA) to tackle the number one killer of women: heart disease.
This "silent killer" takes the life of one woman every 80 seconds and accounts for more female deaths each year than all cancers combined. To put this in perspective: Breast cancer kills one in 31 women; heart disease kills one in three. Young women are becoming particularly vulnerable, especially African Americans and Hispanics. And yet, women's heart disease is painfully under-researched and does not garner the major media attention it deserves. We must take action now to stop this epidemic, and this new partnership with WHA demonstrates Ohio State's commitment to that fight.
Although this new initiative focuses on educating and screening college-aged women, we ultimately want to spread the message of heart health to women across Buckeye Nation. Watch this video to learn more about this exciting endeavor and discover some simple ways you can start living a heart healthy life today. A motto I've been using recently is "heart healthy now, heart healthy later." After all, the choices we make today can prevent chronic disease later and will affect how we spend our years to come.
Here's wishing all of you health and happiness this summer!
Fondly,
Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/PMHNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN Associate Vice President for Health Promotion University Chief Wellness Officer Dean and Professor, College of Nursing Professor of Pediatrics & Psychiatry, College of Medicine The Ohio State University

Evidence-based healthcare
Are you receiving the best, most current care when you go to the hospital? Evidence says: maybe not. Dean Melnyk discusses her research in a recent issue of The Conversation and explains how patients can ASK4EBP. Read more.
Health survey for nurses
As part of the national Million Hearts® initiative, we're asking nurses to complete a brief, anonymous survey regarding their current health and healthy lifestyle behaviors. The results will help surveyors identify ways to improve the cardiovascular health and wellness of nurses. Those who complete the survey will gain free access to an online Million Hearts module focused on living a healthy lifestyle. The survey will remain open through the month of July. Take the survey.

Cynthia Moore-Hardy, FACHE
OSU degrees: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) 1979
Current role: President and CEO of Lake Health
Professionally, I am most proud of the opening of TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township, Ohio. TriPoint Medical Center was the first new full-service, acute care hospital to be built in Northeast Ohio in 28 years. It was built on the belief that everything should revolve around patients and their families and was one of the first hospitals to integrate principles of evidence-based design—a concept that links the quality of the hospital environment to patient outcomes.
Interesting fact: I enjoy week-long bicycling trips. My favorite trip was on the San Juan islands.
