MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
|
|
|
Recently I experienced a valuable lesson in gratitude. In July, my daughter, Angela, was involved in a terrible car accident. She sustained multiple injuries in the crash, including a displaced hip and a broken femur. I rushed to Arizona to be by her side and spent the week between visits to the hospital and caring for my seven-month-old grandchild (who is an absolute joy). Although Angela has a long and challenging road to recovery ahead of her, we feel so fortunate that she is alive and wasn't more seriously injured.
Events like this make you stop and appreciate what you have in life, as it could all be gone in the blink of an eye. For me, it was a reminder of the importance of showing gratitude every day. Did you know that gratitude doesn't just make you feel good—it's actually good for your health, too? Multiple studies support that higher levels of gratitude are linked to better heart health, less depression, less fatigue, improved sleep and a stronger immune system. Before bed, try to write down three things you're grateful for and why. Focusing on the positive in our lives leads to noticing more and more positive things. And that's definitely something to be grateful for!
Fondly,
Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/PMHNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN Associate Vice President for Health Promotion University Chief Wellness Officer Dean and Professor, College of Nursing Professor of Pediatrics & Psychiatry, College of Medicine The Ohio State University

Ohio State degrees: Master of Science in Nursing (MS) 1980, Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) 1990
Current role: Professor and Director, Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program, College of Nursing & Health Teaching, Wright State University

No matter the cause, be sure you get the support you need if you are experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression, especially if they are interfering with your performance or usual activities. Using the services available at Ohio State, such as the on-line evidence-based Beating the Blues offered by our Employee Assistance Program, can help to improve your emotional health.
