Message from the Dean and Vice President for Health Promotion

As I watched our latest graduating class of students and heard about their dreams for the next five to 10 years, I felt confident that we gave them the knowledge and skills to accomplish them. Very importantly, we instilled in them the ability to dream, discover and deliver. I marveled at the many ways our newest alumni (456 of them!) have to keep in touch with their classmates, their college and the world. Students used to leave Newton Hall wondering if they would ever see some of their classmates again. Now they can follow their college and their friends’ triumphs and joys daily in living color thanks to the technology that has made social media possible. I’m so thankful that as this new class goes forward to transform healthcare and improve lives, they will be able to do so together, more connected than any other generation has ever been, and they will take us with them.

Two new NIH grants are furthering our research, and our faculty continue to make important strides in all of our priorities and initiatives. New NIH grants fund projects for Balas and Tate

The National Institutes of Health/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NIH/NHLBI) has awarded associate professor Michele Balas, PhD, RN, CCRN-K, FCCM, FAAN, and colleagues an R01 grant for the study, “Determinants of Implementation Success Coordinating Ventilator/Early Ambulation and Rehabilitation Efforts in the ICU (DISCOVER-ICU).” The National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Aging (NIH/NIA) awarded associate professor Judith Tate, PhD, RN, and colleagues a grant for the study, “A Problem Solving Intervention for Post-ICU Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults.”

Professionally, I am most proud of: being the first nurse practitioner in pioneering ultrasound in the clinical practice of obstetrics and gynecology (mentored by John Hobbins, MD, FACOG, of the Yale University College of Medicine) and one of the first nurse practitioners accepted to and graduating from a medical acupuncture for physicians course at the UCLA School of Medicine and the Helms Medical Institute for Medical Acupuncture.

Interesting fact: When I attain my United States patent later this year, I will be one of very few American women (less than 6% in U.S. history) to hold a U.S. patent.

Employee well-being month

Happy and healthy employees are more productive and engaged at work. To promote well-being in your department, host a healthy potluck, start wellness walks and walking meetings or organize a lunch presentation to learn about a specific wellness topic. Find out if your employer offers fitness or yoga classes or other health incentives. If you are retired, consider volunteering your time to educate others about wellness in the workplace.
