Message from the Dean and Vice President for Health Promotion

Bernadette MelnykAt convocation I’ll be asking our newest group of College of Nursing alumni one of my favorite questions, “What will you do in the next five years if you know that you can’t fail?” Then I’ll ask them to write their biggest dreams down on a piece of paper and give them to me. It’s a tradition I’ve come to cherish, seeing the big dreams our students have for advancing healthcare and transforming lives, and knowing that so many of those dreams will come to fruition.

As you can read below, our big dreams continue to come true for our terrific college. We recently opened our telehealth clinic at Lima Campus, providing on-site healthcare to students, faculty and staff with help from the College of Nursing’s Total Health and Wellness Clinic. And the Barbers and Beauticians Who Care program is now in its third year. Many of our faculty and PhD students were honored at the Midwestern Nursing Research Society conference. Maybe you know someone who deserves recognition too; you can nominate a fellow alumna or alumnus for a Nursing Alumni Society Award (see below).

For more news from our college, look in your mailboxes for the fantastic spring 2018 edition of Transformations, our alumni magazine, coming out in early May. And let us know about the progress you’re making toward your own big dreams. I cherish our alumni, and I am so proud of the wonderful positive impact they make in the world.

Fondly,

Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, PhD, RN, APRN-CNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN
Vice President for Health Promotion
University Chief Wellness Officer

Professionally, I am proud of my contributions to critical care nursing practice, education and research. As a clinical nurse specialist, I have influenced critical care practices by promoting evidence-based practices and testing interventions to identify best practices. As an educator, I am fortunate to have taught countless students at all levels in both clinical and classroom settings. These individuals have gone on to do amazing work. I have also edited 7 editions of a critical care textbook that has reached thousands more nurses in the U.S. and worldwide. As a researcher, I have focused on improving outcomes of mechanically-ventilated patients.

Interesting fact: I love the water; it is my therapy. Boating, fishing, diving, or just reading by the water all provide peace and well-being.

Buckeye Wellness Tip

April: Enjoy the weather, get moving outside

As the weather gets warmer, it’s the perfect opportunity to get moving outdoors. Meet your weekly 150 minutes of physical activity, along with fresh air and vitamin D. Go for a walk or jog, ride a bike, or take a walk in the woods. If you are at work, ask a colleague to join you for a wellness walk on your next break.
