School Nurse Wellness Coordinator Certificate

Our online School Nurse Wellness Coordinator certificate is the only approved program like this offered in Ohio. This certificate will prepare you for leadership opportunities and positions in health and wellness in your school district.


Through this certificate program, you will be prepared to:

  • Use a systems approach to provide leadership and coordination for the wellness of students and their families, school staff and the community at-large
  • Provide coordination of the school’s health service delivery system
  • Provide emergency preparedness programming
  • Provide leadership with school staff, and collaboration with other pupil service personnel leaders and administrators


The certificate program includes five courses: four online graduate core courses and one practicum course, for a total of 13 graduate credit hours. At the completion of the program, you’ll earn an academic certificate from The Ohio State University and then be eligible to apply to ODE for a School Nurse Wellness Coordinator endorsement.

Nursing 7403 (3 credit hours) Innovation Leadership in Advanced Nursing Practice

Analysis of organizational leadership and ethical essentials necessary to deliver high quality patient care in diverse settings.


Nursing 7491 (2 credit hours) Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Across the Lifespan

Analyze strategies to encourage change in both individual's and population's health behaviors that influence risk reduction in multiple settings. Develop educational strategies utilizing advanced critical thinking.


Nursing 7500 (2 credit hours) Health Policy and Advocacy  

Analysis of the U.S. healthcare delivery system and the policy making process, with an emphasis on the social, political and economic factors affecting the delivery of nursing services.


Nursing 7780 (3 credit hours) Evidence-Based Nursing Scholarship

Introduction to the process for evidence-based practice. Includes clinical question generation, literature search methods, critique of research methods and appropriate statistical analysis in published research evidence and synthesis of evidence related to clinical nursing problems.


Nursing 7110 (3 credit hours) School Nurse Wellness Coordinator Practice

School nurse wellness coordinator field experience in a school setting applying the roles and responsibilities of a school nurse wellness coordinator.


Admission Requirements*

  • 3.0 GPA – The GRE is required for a GPA less than 3.0
  • Active, unencumbered Ohio RN license
  • Active Ohio Department of Education School Nurse Professional Pupil Services License
  • Ohio resident
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree – Note: Beginning January 1, 2020, the Ohio Department of Education will require applicants to have a master’s degree


*Those seeking Ohio Department of Education endorsement as a School Nurse Wellness Coordinator will need to have 3 years of ODE licensed SN experience and a master’s degree after January 1, 2020. If you are licensed as an RN outside of Ohio, you will need to determine if your state is approved for this program.


Students will be held to the College of Nursing and university standards for admission, as well as academic and ethical performance standards. The minimum GPA and grades to complete the program are a GPA of 3.0/4.0 and only grades of A through B- may be counted toward the completion of the certificate program.
