These free courses are sponsored by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services in partnership with Ohio State’s College of Social Work. We created a multi-module continuing education course in order to share the best practices for addressing and treating mental health and substance use disorders. Through each module, you will explore a variety of evidence-based approaches, ranging from health promotion to trauma-informed care.

This course was designed with the registered nurse and community health worker in mind.

Health Promotion and Wellness (2.73 CEs)

In this module, you will review cognitive behavior skills while examining the effect of COVID-19 on mental and physical health. Using evidence-based practices, you will gain the skills to encourage mindfulness, wellness plans and healthy coping mechanisms.

Introduction to Motivational Interviewing (2.78 CEs)

Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based treatment strategy that can be used to strengthen client motivation and commitment to a particular behavioral change or goal. In this module, you will learn to identify the stages of behavioral change, explore the use of motivational interviewing and develop SMART goals with clients.

Primer on Opiate Use Disorders and Recovery Supports (5.13 CEs)

During this training, you will gain a deeper understanding of the opioid crisis and initiatives in place to help combat the crisis, which includes medication-assisted treatment, harm reduction strategies and Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC).

Trauma-Informed Care (2.58 CEs)

In this module, you will learn the importance of understanding, recognizing and responding to the effects of trauma. Then, you will explore trauma-informed and prevention strategies to utilize in practice.

Individuals can register and complete any modules, in any order, and will be awarded CEs upon completion of each module. Individuals can earn a total of 13.22 continuing education hours.

In partnership with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, The Ohio State University College of Nursing is presenting a series of free training opportunities. The purpose of this training series is to provide no-cost, regional opportunities for Continuing Education (CE) for Community Health Workers and the Behavioral Health workforce based on areas of need identified by members of the workforce. Our objective is to provide training opportunities that will help increase opportunities for professional development, increase confidence, expand individual knowledge bases and enhance existing skills.
