Barbers and Beauticians Who Care

Local businesses partner with Ohio State College of Nursing to offer Free health screenings

Six beauty salons and barber shops in the Mt. Vernon area on the east side of Columbus are partnering with The Ohio State University College of Nursing to host free health screenings for adults on Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. thanks to the Barbers and Beauticians Who Care program. No appointment is necessary for adults in the area to receive screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar and stress.

This is the third year of the program that sends College of Nursing faculty and students, and nurses from OSU Hospitals East into the community to provide free health screenings and referrals when necessary. Over the past three years, Ask A Buckeye Nurse has served over 1,100 adults and provided referrals for 172 adults who live on the Near East Side.

The program is supported this year by Ohio State Chief Wellness Officer Bernadette Melnyk, vice president for health promotion and dean of the College of Nursing. She champions healthy lifestyles choices like eating five fruits and vegetables a day, and participating in screenings to develop an awareness of risk factors. According to the American Heart Association, more than 40 percent of African-American men and women have high blood pressure. For African-Americans, high blood pressure often develops earlier in life and is usually more severe. African-Americans also have higher rates of diabetes
