Todd E. Tussing, DNP, RN, NE-BC is Administrative Director of Nursing and Patient Care Services at University Hospital East of the Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University.  He has over 30 years of nursing experience of which 27 years have been in some type of leadership role.   Dr. Tussing began his nursing career as a staff nurse in various intensive care units with experience in caring for critically ill medical and surgical patients.  He rounded out his 10 year critical care experience caring for patient’s post trauma, burn and open-heart surgery.  Dr. Tussing began his leadership career as charge nurse in various intensive care units and progressed to nursing supervisor for a three hundred bed hospital.  From there he took his first nurse manager position and held the title of nurse manager for 11 years during which time he managed seven different nursing units.  For over six years of the seven he managed a 12 bed CCU and three bed open-heart recovery unit combining skills for unit leadership and program leadership for success quality metrics for post-open heart patients including 1) no sternal infections 2) no use of blood products post-surgery and 3) 4 day length of stay for primary CABG, his unit receiving the Solucient Award for quality. In 2009, Dr. Tussing took his first director of nursing position at University hospital East with operational oversite for 8 nursing cost centers (including 3 medical floors, 1 ICU, 1 Step-down,  1 emergency department and an out-patient Wound Care Center with over 400 employee in his division.  In 2015 he was given a promotion to Administrative Director and was given an additional non-nursing department, Respiratory Therapy. He is a member of the hospitals Senior Administrative Team contributing to the development and operationalization of the strategic plan as well as takes top of hospital administrative call four weeks of the year.

 

Dr. Tussing graduated from The Community Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield, Ohio in 1987 and completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio in 1991.  He graduated with his Master of Science in Nursing and Health Systems Administration from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio in 2006 and followed up with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree (in nursing and health system administration) from Wright State University in 2015.  He is a board certified nurse with the American Nurses Credentialing Center passing his Nurse Executive exam in 2007.  Previously, he had been Critical Care Registered Nurse certified through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses back in 1993.

 

Dr. Tussing has been actively involved in educating new nurses as he was an Adjunct Nursing Instructor for Clark State Community College in Springfield, Ohio for 4 full academic years teaching senior level nursing clinical courses in a pre-licensure program.  He taught for Urbana University, Urbana, Ohio, from 2004 – 2014, in their BSN Completion program teaching nursing management, nursing leadership and nursing research courses.  From 2016, Dr. Tussing has been affiliated with the College of Nursing at The Ohio State University teaching the graduate program: Nursing and Health System Administration teaching nursing management courses as course lead.
