College of Nursing e-News

APRIL 2017

Message from the Dean

Bernadette MelnykAs spring brightens up campus with daffodils and blossoming trees and the semester turns toward convocation and commencement, I am reminded that while graduation marks an ending, "commencement" actually means "beginning." As many of our students prepare for graduation, they are dreaming and planning beyond that date for their new careers and new lives as Buckeye Nurses. Graduation is just the beginning! And there are so many new beginnings here at the College of Nursing this spring.

I'm honored to share with you the exciting news of our latest U.S. News & World Report ranking for 2017. For the first time ever, our college ranked fifth in the nation for both nursing master's and DNP programs. This outstanding achievement means we are the number one public college in the United States for nursing master's, and number two for DNP programs! This dramatic leap in rank attests to the transformative power of the collective dreams of our students, faculty and staff as well as their excellence and hard work to achieve our goals. The reputation for excellence of our alumni, too, helps determine this ranking, so thanks to each and every one of you for making us great!

Several new faculty members are starting new careers with us, including Sharon Tucker, who has joined us to direct the Translational Research Core of our Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice, Lynda (Lyn) Hardy who will direct data science for the college and Carmen Giurgescu, an NIH-funded researcher and associate professor. And in Newton Hall Lobby we've hosted the newly-built moveable workshop, the Innovation Studio, inviting everyone to try their hands at innovating health care solutions. It's a dream that was made possible by a generous gift from alumna Connie Hahn Sharpe ('69) and her husband Gary Sharpe. It’s truly an exciting time to be at the College of Nursing!

I can't wait to see the achievements and innovations of our 549 new alumni as they spring forward into the world of health care. I wish them, and all of you, success, great health and optimal well-being as they dream, discover and deliver a brighter future for people across the world.

Alumni Spotlight

Casey Miller, RN, MS, CPNP

Ohio State degrees: MS (2015) with a specialty in primary pediatrics

Recent award: March of Dimes Nurse of the Year in Public Health, 2017

Current role: Inpatient pediatric nurse practitioner at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I primarily work with children with brain tumors and solid tumors.

Professionally, I am proud of making my dream job a career. Ever since my cousin was diagnosed with neuroblastoma over 15 years ago, I have always wanted to work in pediatric oncology. I had no idea which career path I wanted to take in oncology until talking with my mom (who has been a nurse for 30 years) and realizing nursing encompassed everything I was passionate about. All of my experiences from RN to NP at Ohio State have led me to become a nurse practitioner at a world-renowned pediatric oncology institution.

Interesting fact: When I was 8, my dance team won 2nd place on America's Funniest Home Videos. So HAPPY this was pre-YouTube!
