Technology Services for Collaborators

The following list of services is provided to Researchers and External Collaborators, including students and content developers in Academy for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (AcCELL). The College of Nursing IT Support is please to support those working with our faculty and College on projects, please ask your supporting faculty or administrator to meet with us so that we are aware of your needs.


Research Support

The College offers the following services that are used frequently by research projects and teams at the College

Databases

Databases can be created for research projects or administrative purposes and can utilize data from the Student Information System, the University’s Operational Data Store or other College databases as data sources.

  • Most College databases utilize SQL Server 2012 to store the data and Microsoft Access as a front end or query interface.
  • ScriptCaser is a toolkit utilized to create web-facing databases and front ends for databases
  • Query Development and Reporting can be customized using Pentaho by the database developer to meet the needs of database users and researchers

Dedicated Servers

The College supports and hosts a dedicated array of research servers that assist in data processing, aggregation, and collection.

Secure Cloud Storage

Hosted on secure and internal servers, the College has its own cloud storage system based off of OwnCloud that allows a seamless transition of data from mobile devices to desktops under the security of the college's network and encryption. The data never once touches the outside world, and the security adhears to all restrictions set upon by the OCIO.

Secure Document Management

Hosted on secure and internal servers, the College has its own document management system that provides versioning, backup, and legacy support all protected by the college's network and encryption.

Poster Printing

The College of Nursing IT Department funds poster printing for College of Nursing faculty. Posters are typically sized 48” wide by 36” tall. We request 2 business days to process and print posters, see the Post Resources link below for additional information and submission details.

SharePoint

SharePoint is the software we use for the College of Nursing Intranet and StudentWeb portals. SharePoint facilitates the sharing of documents and has collaboration features that make it easy to manage document revisions when working in a team.

  • Document management features include the ability to collect and share documents with a team chosen by the creator of a site. This can be used to share documents within an area of the College or with a project-specific team.
  • Collaboration features include the ability to have discussions, e-mail and create wikis and blogs online. These features make it easy to collect and share information.
  • Custom workflows for SharePoint can assist you in automating processes by allowing you to create custom forms with custom routing decision support logic.

Survey Software

Survey software is an important tool for researchers, teachers, doctoral students and staff. To meet this need we have a secure, hosted system called Qualtrics.

  • Qualtrics Survey software is utilized as a data collection and survey tool. It supports a variety of questions types including CSV, SPSS and web-page based report generation. Qualtrics has been utilized in numerous research programs due to its due to its ease of use and analytical flexibility.

Webinar

The College supports multiple webinar technologies for meetings and web based conferencing. Either a headset (VOIP) or teleconference line can be utilized for audio and any application, presentations or a video stream can be shared in addition to audio.

Support for Centers and Outreach

The following list of services is provided to those collaborating with our centers or outreach efforts by partnering with Faculty and Staff of the College of Nursing. Services are dependent upon the nature and type of these collaborations, some will require cost share. Ask your College of Nursing partner to contact the IT Department for a needs assessment in the planning stages of your collaboration.

E-Mail

The College of Nursing uses the University E-mail System

  • The e-mail service supports synchronization via ActiveSync technologies and the BlackBerry Enterprise Service, allowing iPhone, Android and BlackBerry phones to synchronize calendars, e-mail and contacts.
  • Custom e-mail address for projects can be created

SharePoint

Academy for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (AcCELL)

The College offers a wide-spread list of technologies to support programs of the Academy for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (AcCELL). Listed below is a selection of these services which are available to instructors teaching in AcCELL sponsored programs. Please ask the Director of the AcCELL to contact the IT Department to discuss utilizing any of the services below.

Presentation Technology

The College of Nursing has one lecture hall and six traditional classrooms. These rooms are supported and maintained by the IT Department and is equipped with the following standard equipment:

  • Touch screen control system
  • A projector, supplemented with plasma screens in larger rooms, and an installed speaker system
  • A computer running Windows 7
  • Microphone and webcam for lecture capture (Panopto Recorder) and online meetings (CarmenConnect)
  • Standard software (See Computer Support)

For events and classes outside of the College, the College can provide a portable projector and laptop to faculty and staff for short-term loan. Some venues may require or be best suited for renting their equipment, however, so check with your event planner or the College IT department.

Learning Management System

We support a learning management system that has been specifically tailored to Continuing Education and programs that reach beyond the University. This system facilitated Continuing Education courses in a variety of ways

  • Management of content
  • Rule-based Continuing Education certificates
  • Registration system

eLearning Development

We support and encourage the development of eLearning modules, online courses and continuing education courses. At this time we support the four online programs of the College, numerous online courses and programs hosted through the Academy for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (AcCELL).

  • Carmen is learning management system for credit-bearing courses offered at Ohio State. We utilize Carmen to deliver and organize content in all of our degree programs and can consult with faculty to increase their skills, create quizzes and tests and integrate Carmen use into their courses.
  • SoftChalk is an easy to use eLearning Authoring tool supported by the College which can be utilized to easily create interactive eLearning modules for courses, continuing education and training.
  • College of Nursing IT professionals have been trained to utilize the Quality Matters framework to ensure course quality.
  • The College of Nursing IT Department supports the Academy for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (AcCELL) use of technology to create and deliver eLearning courses.

Lecture Capture, Podcasting and Video

The College of Nursing IT Department can support a variety of technologies to produce and deliver video content.

  • Panopto is the preferred tool for the creation and distribution of content. It can be used to record audio, video and computer screens from one or more computers and can “Live Broadcast” presentations or allow them to be streamed. Videos can be edited online without the need for additional software installation. Panopto can also be utilized as a Podcasting system or for delivery of content on mobile devices and smartphones.
  • Podcasts: Panopto is utilized to create audio and video podcasts for subscription of content and delivery to mobile devices, smart phones and computers.
  • Digital Video: We support the creation of content utilizing camcorders, the Integrated Codec Unit (ICU) and the iSWAT. Primarily our support services are for simulations and basic one-camera videos. If more complicated shoots are necessary please contact support.

Webinar

The College supports webinar technologies for courses that want to meet synchronously online, outreach and to facilitate meetings. This software can be used for meeting and advising online students or for virtual office hours.
