Nursing Science
The Master of Science in Nursing Science specialty track will educate registered nurses who desire to have a graduate education in research processes. Following completion of the specialty, graduates will be prepared to work in research management in clinical or laboratory settings or proceed directly into the PhD program. The track can be completed in one academic year or can be completed part-time in two years. There are also options for summer classes to lighten the course load during the academic year.
The specialty is designed for both new and experienced registered nurses. This track is not available as a Graduate Entry option due to the RN requirement, nor is it available as a Post-Master's option. Traditional MS students only will be considered. Graduates of the specialty will have two different career opportunities. Clinical nurses who desire a master's degree for research purposes as opposed to completing one of the nurse practitioner specialty tracks will be prepared to assist with research protocols in terms of development, implementation, and analysis. In addition, some graduates will choose to go directly into the PhD program to become nurse scientists who can advance the knowledge base for nursing practice through independent research and scholarly activities.
Essential skills
Graduates of the Nursing Science research specialty will be prepared to serve as a program director for or a team member of research studies. Skills which will support the research role include:
