Research Interests:

Usha Menon, PhD, RN, FAAN is professor and vice-dean at The Ohio State University College of Nursing. Her research focuses on the development and testing of tailored interventions to increase cancer screening behavior. A major emphasis of this research has been on increasing early detection among aging and vulnerable minority populations and the reduction of health disparities in cancer prevention using rigorous theory-based models of inquiry. She has been consistently funded by the National Institutes of Health and other national foundations such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Dr. Menon teaches across nursing curricula including graduate elective courses in conducting interventions with diverse populations, and conducting integrative literature reviews. In previous academic roles she has served as: the co-director of the Community Engagement & Research Core of the Center for Clinical Translational Sciences, co-PI of the Cancer Education and Career Development Program to train pre and post doctoral fellows across biological and behavioral cancer control research, and co-PI of the P60 Center for the Elimination of Health Disparities at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Dr. Menon chaired and taught three Nursing Research Institutes nationally for the Oncology Nursing Foundation, mentoring junior faculty to develop programs of research in oncology nursing, and serves on the Research Advisory Panel for the Oncology Nursing Foundation. In Arizona, she is currently a member of the Steering Committee for the Asian American Pacific Islander Community in Action. She is the 2006 recipient of the inaugural Investigator with a Brilliant Future Award from the American Academy of Nursing/Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science, and was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2009. Dr. Menon is a recognized expert in behavior change theory and interventions. An engaging and passionate public speaker, she is a frequent consultant and presenter to national and international groups of researchers, clinicians, and community members.

Funded Grants:

Principal Investigator (MPI).  Menon/Larkey. The purpose of this two-phase study is to test the effectiveness of an intervention using “community-to-clinic navigators” to guide individuals from an especially hard-to-reach, multicultural and underinsured population into primary care clinics to receive a healthcare provider referral for CRC screening (Phase I) and, subsequently, to test a clinic navigation program to complete CRC screening (Phase II). National Cancer Institute: 2012-2017.
