Smoking cessation grant awarded to Graham
Dr. Margaret Graham, associate professor, has received one of seven Global Research Awards for Nicotine Dependence (GRAND) with support from Pfizer. The $100,000 grant will fund her project, “Web-based smoking cessation for women: A pilot study.” Graham’s project is a randomized trial of web-based audio counseling for smoking cessation in 100 female smokers.


Hyun, Landers join faculty
Dr. Sookyung Hyun has joined the College of Nursing faculty as an assistant professor. Hyun holds a joint appointment with the Department of Biomedical Informatics in the College of Medicine. She earned a Doctor of Nursing Science in Nursing Informatics degree from Columbia University School of Nursing where she served as an associate research scientist. Hyun received an MSN and BSN from the College of Nursing at Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea.  

Dr. Timothy Landers returns to the college as an assistant professor. He served as a clinical instructor for the college from 2002 to 2008, while completing his doctoral degree. In 2008, he earned a PhD in epidemiology from The Ohio State University College of Public Health. He most recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University’s School of Nursing. Landers received an MS in nursing, with a concentration as a family nurse practitioner, from Pace University in Pleasantville, NY in 1995; an MA in theology from LaSalle University in Philadelphia, PA in 1992; and a BSN from Binghamton University, in Vestal, NY in 1990. 
    Landers’ clinical background includes practicing as a family nurse practitioner in a variety of settings for the past 15 years. He is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a family nurse practitioner (FNP)and a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP). 


College of Nursing gains reaccreditation
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the accrediting body of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, has granted a full ten-year approval of the College of Nursing’s undergraduate and master’s programs. A CCNE accrediting team completed a site visit to the college in April. All CCNE standards were met with no compliance concerns.


Ohio Board of Nursing grant to help grow college's DNP program
The College of Nursing plans to expand its post-licensure programs, particularly the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, thanks to a $199,000 grant from the Ohio Board of Nursing. The funding, over two years, will be used during the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years. The Ohio Board of Nursing has provided nearly $800,000 over six years in support of the college's educational programs.


Steward receives HRSA grant for neonatal nurse practitioner education
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded Dr. Deborah Steward a grant in the amount of $442,954 for her project, "Enhancing the Quality of Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Education." The major objectives of this project are to increase the numbers of graduate students prepared as NNPs who will provide care to high-risk neonates from central Ohio and the 29-county area of southeastern Ohio that comprise the Appalachian area; prepare graduate students to manage the increasing complexity of care required by high-risk neonates admitted to the NICU; and examine the impact of an increasingly diverse population on the approach to management of high-risk neonates in the NICU.


Niekro recognized by Board of Trustees
The Ohio State University Board of Trustees awarded College of Nursing Grad Entry student Dennis Niekro its Student Recognition Award for his academic achievement and service. Niekro has maintained a 4.0 GPA and serves on the college's Diversity Committee, is a founding member of NSPIRE (Nursing Students Promoting Initiatives to Reinforce Equality), is a Graduate Entry Student Ambassador, and is involved with the college's Summer Nursing Institute. He has served as a community health educator, hospice counselor and volunteer for Columbus AIDS Task Force. He was nominated for the award by Dean Elizabeth Lenz.
