Pre-Nursing Admissions

First-year students:
Admitted first-year Ohio State students who have an ACT composite of 25 or higher or combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1185 or higher may enroll as a Pre-Nursing student. Admitted first-year Ohio State students who do not meet the above criteria can enroll in the health professions exploration program (http://exploration.osu.edu/) to consider alternative majors.  Please note that students who are not in Pre-Nursing can still complete all the Nursing application requirements to successfully apply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing option.

First-year Honors students: Admitted first-year students who have an ACT composite of 30 or higher or combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1340 or higher and are in the top 10% of their high school class will be invited to the University Honors Program. Students entering Ohio State as a University Honors student will be guaranteed admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program if they maintain the University Honors status.   Please contact the Honors and Scholars Center at (614) 292-3135. 

Current Columbus campus students: Ohio State students can learn more about switching their major to Pre-Nursing by attending a Major Change Overview. Please call (614) 292-4041or click here for the dates and times of those sessions. Students are eligible to switch to Pre-Nursing provided they have at least 12 hours of Ohio State credit and a minimum Ohio State GPA of 3.0.

Current regional campus students
Students from a regional campus may request to change to the Columbus campus and into the Pre-Nursing major. Students at a regional campus are required to submit the Campus Change Request form to the Office of Student Affairs in the College of Nursing prior to the applicable deadline. Please refer to the table below regarding the request to change deadline. In order to be eligible to change to the Columbus campus, regional campus students must have 45 Ohio State credit hours in progress and maintain a minimum Ohio State GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Transfer students: Admitted transfer students to Ohio State can enroll in Pre-Nursing provided they have at least 45 quarter hours (or 30 semester hours) of transfer credit and at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on all previous college coursework. Transfer students who have less than 45 quarter or 30 semester credit hours will need an ACT composite score of 25 or higher or an SAT combined critical thinking and reading score of 1185 to enroll in Pre-Nursing. Transfer students who do not meet the above criteria can enroll in the health professions exploration program (http://exploration.osu.edu/) to consider alternative majors. Prospective RN to BSN students: Admitted transfer students who have at least 45 credit hours, a 2.75 college GPA, and are licensed as a registered nurse or are currently enrolled in an associate degree nursing program can enroll in the Pre-Nursing RN to BSN option.

Admission into the BSN option
Admission to the nursing major is a formal and very competitive process. Students should plan to apply to the BSN option during their pre-nursing year. Applications may be submitted between October 1 and February 1, with February 1 as the application deadline. Students are admitted to the BSN major for an autumn quarter start.* The application can be found at http://www.professional.osu.edu.
